Lei ana o Kalamaʻula
I ka ulu niu, i ka ulu niu
Niu haohao
Me ka wai māpunapuna
E pipiʻiana i ka ʻae one
Chorus:
Kukui, Lanikāula
Ha Kaulana, nā kanaka
E naue mai, ae ʻike
I ka meahou, o ka ʻāina
A he ʻāina, ua kaulana
Mai nā kūpuna mai
Haʻaheo Molokaʻi
Kāula kukui o Lanikāula
|
Kalamaʻula is bedecked
With coconut groves, coconut groves that yield
Soft-meat coconut
With fresh spring
water
Yes, bubbling in the sand
Hui:
Enlightened Lanikāula
Revered of all men
Coming to learn
News of the land
Land famous
From ancient times
The pride of Molokaʻi
Enlightened prophet, Lanikāula

G. Cooke collection - Kalamaʻula (the red torch or red lama tree) south
of Kaunakahakai is the site
of the first homestead
on Molokaʻi. The hui was the inspiration
for "Pupu Aʻo Ewa". In bygone days, the people gathered to
learn news of the land. In this instance, the news was the contest between
nā kāula to determine who was the most powerful. Music clip by Gippy
